A robust and cost-effective solution
A hard wearing, bound rubber shredded surface, rubber mulch is ideally suited for play areas that need impact protection, including school playgrounds or playground flooring. As it doesn’t require any special preparation, including groundworks or raised edging, it’s also suited to areas which present unusual or awkward landscaping challenges – including over grass mats or artificial turf, mounds and tree pits, gravel, paving, old bark pits or damaged or worn-out wet pour. Other applications include pathways and daily mile tracks, so it’s highly versatile.
Bonded rubber mulch is produced from recycled SPK tyres which are shredded into bark-like shapes and dyed to create a natural appearance. Available in a variety of colours and shades it’s strong, highly durable and provides a non-slip, porous surface that doesn’t rot, deteriorate or wash away, in contrast to bark. To prevent weed growth, rubber mulch is laid on top of a geotextile.
Rubber mulch tends to be a cheaper alternative to wetpour as there is generally no need for groundworks. On the rare occasions they’re required, they’re generally shallower and less complex, and can often be completed with a ‘chase cut’ finish. A rubber mixture is prepared on site, screeded to the required depth and left to dry for 24 hours. After that, it delivers years of trouble-free play!
